Infertility

Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system in which a woman is unable to achieve a clinical pregnancy after one year or more of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. It affects both men and women and is widely recognized as a medical condition by the World Health Organization.

Some of the common causes of infertility in women include problems with ovulation, such as irregular or absent release of eggs, blockage or damage to the fallopian tubes which prevents the egg and sperm from meeting, and conditions like endometriosis that interfere with normal reproductive function.

In men, infertility is often caused by low sperm count, poor sperm movement, abnormal sperm shape, or blockage in the reproductive tract that prevents sperm from being released properly.

Many couples experience infertility, and it can lead to emotional and mental stress such as anxiety, sadness and social pressure. However, with proper medical guidance and modern medical technology, many infertility cases can be managed. One important treatment is in-vitro fertilization (IVF), a procedure in which eggs are collected from the woman and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory, and the resulting embryo is then transferred into the woman’s uterus to help achieve pregnancy.

In many communities in Nigeria, infertility is often misunderstood and unfairly blamed mainly on women, even though medical evidence shows that both men and women can contribute equally to fertility problems. This misunderstanding increases stigma and emotional suffering for affected couples.
In conclusion, infertility is a medical condition that requires awareness, proper diagnosis and compassionate support. Promoting education and access to modern treatment can help reduce stigma and improve the quality of life for couples living with infertility.
